Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has warned Barcelona that the €300 million (£271m) release clause in Lionel Messi’s current deal, might not be high enough anymore.
Klopp was speaking against the backdrop of Messi’s now former team-mate, Neymar, who had a €220m (£198m) clause written into his deal at the Camp Nou, as part of La Liga regulations requiring it as part of a contract.
However, last Thursday, Paris Saint-Germain paid the amount in full and took the Brazilian.
“It’s pretty simple. Until now it was simply seen as impossible,” Klopp told DAZN.
“Then there is the list, with the release-clauses for Barcelona. Leo Messi, €300m.
“In a period of just a month that suddenly sounds possible too. That used to be an outrageous amount. They just set that amount randomly. I mean who would pay €300m. And now it simply happened.”
