Osogbo-born professionals, home and abroad, under the aegis of Osogbo Affairs Foundation (OSAF) and a social-political mevement Tiwa n Tiwa L’osun have condemned the gruesome murder of Mr Timilehin Shonibare, a 400 level Microbiology student of the Osun State University.
In a separate statement signed by the Conveners of the groups Prince Hameed Oyegbade and Mr Kunle Rasheed Adegoke (K-Rad), the groups condemned in strong terms the gruesome murder of Shonibare which was described as ‘man’s inhumanity to man.
The incident and related occurrences in recent times according to the statements called for a prompt intervention of all well-meaning persons in the society.
The two groups noted that Osogbo has always been known for its serenity, hospitality and peaceful co-existence among the natives and the settlers, and that the gory experience and its likes in recent times are attempts by criminal-minded persons to desecrate the peaceful soil of Osogbo.
The group particularly considered as worrisome the rate at which some unscrupulous people have been perpetrating evil under the guise of being traditionalists/herbalists in the state in recent times.
While condoling with the family of the slain final year student, the groups charged security agencies to be proactive in ridding the state of criminal elements whose actions have continued to cast a shadow of tension over the peaceful atmosphere the state is known for.
“The rate at which ritualists are terrorising the peace of Osogbo and Osun state in general is becoming highly alarming, disturbing and worrisome.
“Some dubious persons under the guise of being herbalists and traditionalists are taking advantage of the peaceful atmosphere in the state, to carry out their dastardly and inhuman acts, which is not only nauseating, but condemnable.”
“While we specially commend the Nigeria Police and all other security agencies in the state on their tireless efforts in keeping the state secure, we urge them to be more proactive in intelligence gathering and generally double their efforts towards stemming this ugly trend.”
“We must commend the Osun Command of the Nigeria Police, particularly the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fimihan Adeoye and his lieutenants for the professionalism they deployed in the quick resolution of the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the young man over a week ago.
“It must be emphasised that we feel seriously disturbed that Osogbo’s hospitable nature is being abused by deadly felons who now strive to scare visitors, investors and settlers away from Osogbo with the most reprehensible and scary atrocities that are now becoming a monthly occurrence in the town.”
“Such barbaric and maniacal acts are naturally alien to Osogbo, and all attempts to ply such trades in Osogbo shall be resisted with all means lawful”, the group observed.
The groups also commiserated with the family and friends of the murdered student and pleaded with his aggrieved colleagues not to take laws into their own hands in their efforts to honour their murdered colleague.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the family and friends of the murdered young man. It is our fervent prayers that they be granted the fortitude to bear the painful experience..”
…”We at the same time wish to sue for peace among his colleagues. They should not give in to any temptation to take to violence in the process of honouring their departed friend. The security agencies are on top of the situation and we trust that the perpetrators of the dastardly act shall be brought to justice in good time”, the group advised.
“We cannot fathom how a human being can choose to terminate the life of another all in a warped search for sudden wealth. It is nothing but man’s inhumanity to man. It is in sharp contrast to the ethos of Omoluabi for which the State of Osun is renowned.”
“Osun is a state of Omoluabi and it is the duty of every Omoluabi in the state to assist the state government and the law enforcement agencies in their untiring efforts to rid our dear state of all criminals and their nefarious tendencies, such as the one leading to the sad death of the young Shonibare”, the group charged.
