How Wayne Rooney Saved His Career – Southgate

England manager, Gareth Southgate believes that Wayne Rooney’s move to Everton has given him the chance to resurrect his England career.

Rooney re-joined Everton this summer and a first-team place could see him return to the England national team.

The 31-year-old’s international days seemed over when he was not called up for last month’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland and the friendly with France.

Southgate said other strikers were in better form than the country’s record scorer, who started only 15 Premier League games for Manchester United last season and scored only five goals.

Rooney re-joined his first club two weeks ago on a free transfer and the promise of more regular football has opened the door to the striker adding to his 119 caps and 53 England goals.

“The great thing for Rooney is that he will probably be playing more regular football and so it’s as simple as that,” Southgate told Standard Sport.

“In the League we only have 70 English players, and so we certainly aren’t ruling anybody out,” Southgate said.

This has been a summer of unprecedented success for the country’s age-group teams with victory at the Under-20 World Cup – England’s first global title since 1966 – and the Under-19 European Championship.
