The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has said it receives an average of 80,000 emergency calls daily.
The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Tiamiyu Adeshina, noted that the calls bordered on [email protected], child abuse, child trafficking, domestic violence, land grabbing, among others, adding that the state government was making efforts to address the problems.
Adeshina spoke on Tuesday at a quarterly stakeholders forum at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Alausa, Ikeja.
He said the event, tagged, ‘A New Dawn in Emergency and Disaster Management in Lagos State’, was to provide workable strategies to renew confidence in the ability of the agency.
He said, “The Command and Control Centre, Alausa, which is the nucleus where all emergency calls are activated to relevant responders, is now being upgraded to interface with those on the field of operation and the control room personnel for support and necessary deployment.
“LASEMA, through the Customers Relations Manager now receives an average of over 80,000 calls on various emergencies and cases such as [email protected], child abuse, child trafficking, domestic violence and land grabbing for dispatch to appropriate authorities for immediate and necessary actions.”
The state Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Seye Oladejo, said the government had decided to establish an aquatic rescue team to check the increasing suicide rate in the state.
He said, “The recent increase in incidents of water-related emergencies such as drowning in the lagoon, wells, soakaways and boat accidents, have drawn great concern from the state government. To this end, the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has expressly approved the establishment of Aquatic Rescue Unit with requisite equipment in LASEMA to effectively respond to this growing trend.
“This unit will complement the activities of sister agencies such as the Marine unit of the Nigeria Police, Lagos State Waterways Authority, Lagos State Ferry Services, among others.”
