Steve Onu (Born August 24, 1975) popularly known by his stage name as Yaw of Wazobia 95.1 FM is a popular Nigerian comedian, actor, producer, director, radio presenter, on-air personality, event consultant and a master of ceremony. He anchors a programme titled “Make Una Wake” on Wazobia 95.1FM Lagos every morning between 6 am and 12 noon. Yaw is the host of his comedy concert tagged Yaw Live on stage and he wrote, produced and packaged a television sitcom entitled Yaws N Myn which airs in Nigeria, Africa and the UK
Early Life and Education
Yaw was born and raised in Lagos state, but he is a native of Awka in Anambra State. He is the seventh of ten children of his parents. He attended Osimoye Primary School Surulere and concluded at Obele Primary School in Surulere. He had his secondary education St. Ann Secondary School Surulere. And then gained admission in Lagos State University, Ojo where he obtained a diploma in Radio, Television and Film Production. He later obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre arts in the same University.
Steve Onu started his career in showbiz since 1995 before he joined 95.1 Wazobia FM radio station as an On-air Personality he worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), He featured in TV drama Twilight Zone and Flatmates, Dear Mother, Fuji House of Commotion and constantly featured in various events doing stage productions at the MUSON Centre in Lagos. The name Yaw originated from a role he played in the famous sitcom entitled Flatmates. He also featured in Popular Nigerian rapper N!gga Raw music video as Yaw in 2006. The Multi-Talented Comedian has organized various successful events which include giggle concert at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and a tattoo beach party at the popular Oniru beach. Yaw has also produced popular stage plays titled April fool, Last Molue, Po! and Private Lies and he has just concluded his personal television sitcom titled Yaws N Myn which presently shows in Nigeria, Africa and the United Kingdom. Yaw has been an actor in the Nigerian movie industry before the industry was changed to Nollywood though he did more of stage acting. He has 50 stage plays in Nigeria and Uk one of which include the one he did with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on a play titled “Story Story”. Steve Onu alias Yaw of Wazobia Fm radio station made a special appearance on Cable News Network (CNN) where he was interviewed regarding his life, work and part in the growth of entertainment industry in Nigeria.
Awards and Recognition
The reputable on air personality has received numerous awards such as United Nation Ambassador for Peace, City People (Radio Personality) award (2008, 2009, 2010), Mode Men (Radio Personality) award (2008, 2009, 2010). He also received an award organized by Opa Williams for best TV actor (Comic)Endorsement
He signed an endorsement deal with MTN telecommunications company, Lekki Gardens and he lifted the Olympic Torch (2010)
Steve Onu Yaw has a lot of property in Lagos. He also makes a lot of money from Radio Presenting, Radio Hypes, anchoring events, MTN adverts, leasing equipment and other businesses.
