Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a new contract at Chelsea that will keep him at the club until June 2020, the Premier League leaders have announced.
Spain international Azpilicueta has started all 15 of Chelsea’s Premier League matches this season, impressing since shifting to centre-back following head coach Antonio Conte’s decision to move to a 3-4-3 formation.
He will make his 200th appearance for Chelsea if he keeps his place for Wednesday’s clash at Sunderland, having performed with distinction across the defensive line since moving to Stamford Bridge for £7 million from Marseille in the summer of 2012.
“I’m really happy to have signed a new contract,” Azpilicueta told Chelsea’s official website.
“Since I arrived here, my target was to progress as a player and win trophies. This new contract gives me the chance to continue my relationship with the club. That’s what I wanted, and obviously I’m really happy here.
“We’ve had some really good moments so far this season. We have a new manager with new ideas, and I’m really happy to be working with him.

“Obviously we can still improve, but the long-term aim for us is to win trophies. That is what we all want — the players, the manager and the fans.”
Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo said he was “delighted Cesar has chosen to extend his stay with us.”
He added: “He has proved himself to be an excellent professional and a top player, which he shows in every single training session and match.
“Anybody who has met him will have seen his incredible and undiluted commitment to the Chelsea cause.”
Speaking at his news conference on Tuesday, Conte added: “I’m pleased, and I’m pleased for him. He’s impressed me a lot with his commitment, his work-rate, his ability to play also in different roles. He’s a good professional and I’m pleased for him, and above all the club and the fans. A really good player has signed.”
Asked if he was a bargain at £7m, he added: “It was a good affair [piece of business] for us, for Chelsea. Azpi is a really good player. Now, I think, his valuation is very high. He’s an important player who can play in different roles. It was a good affair for the club.”
