Bundesliga club Darmstadt have added the name of a fan who died of cancer to the name of their stadium for a season.
The arena will carry the name “Jonathan-Heimes-Stadion am Boellenfalltor” after technology company Merck gave up its naming rights for the season.
Heimes died in March, aged 26, and the idea of renaming the stadium came from his father, a Merck employee.
Darmstadt mayor Jochen Partsch described it as a “unique action that we can only support.”
Club captain Aytac Sulu said the move would provide extra motivation for the team, who are seeking to remain in the top flight for the second straight season.
He said: “The link to Johnny will give us an extra push.”
Darmstadt avoided relegation despite having a limited budget.
