Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani, has described the poor performance of Nigerian athletes in the just concluded Rio Olympic Games in Brazil as the failure of the entire nation.
The Senator who expressed his disappointment via his Facebook page added that the athletes who put on the Nigerian colours at the games deserve an apology because they were not well treated by the government.
Sani noted that if the athletes were well-funded, they would have represented the country better.
His words, “We must be humble enough to tell ourselves the truth. As a nation and as a government, we have failed our athletes in Rio.
“To hide behind a bronze is to hide behind a finger. Our athletes and Nigerians deserve an unreserved apology and a strong assurance and commitment to do the right thing at the right time in the future.
“Where there is no shame and no remorse, there’s no honour. Our national flag didn’t fly in Rio, it soaked and sagged.
“We have just successfully hosted African central bankers in Abuja, we have no reason not to fund our athletes to perform better.”
