Sporting Lisbon have issued a statement to refute claims that key midfielder Adrien Silva is on the brink of joining Premier League champions Leicester City.
Silva, 27, who started four of Portugal’s Euro 2016 matches, including the 1-0 victory over France in the final admitted that he had received a “very interesting” proposal from the English club, but his club is adamant that their star player is staying put.
“After 15 years at Sporting, this opportunity is something exceptional for me and can allow me to… evolve in the Premier League, which is a stunning league,” Silva said in an interview.
Sporting, have moved quickly to allay fears of Silva’s departure, by releasing a club statement on Monday.
“It was absolutely clear that this extension of the attachment [a contract extension signed in February] to Sporting CP meant Adrien Silva would be at the club until the end of his career,” the statement read.
“This has been said and clearly expressed by the club’s president to the player, the father of the athlete and their representatives before consummating the renewal of the contract.”
Another Sporting player that has been linked to Leicester is striker Islam Slimani, as the English champions try to bring in a couple of quality signings before the closure of the transfer window on Wednesday.
