Effects Of Skipping Breakfast – Nutritionists

Adeola Sunor, a clinical Nutritionist, on Wednesday in Lagos advised people not to skip breakfast, saying it has a health consequences on the body.
The Nutritionist told the News Agency of Nigeria that if breakfast was skipped, it could result to obesity and other health hazards.
Sunor said eating breakfast would reduce mid-day cravings and helps maintain a healthy weight.
She said: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and people who eat breakfast every day are more likely to lose weight than those who do not.
“The side effects of not eating breakfast negatively impact weight, hormonal health, memory, cognition and mood.
“This is due to a number of factors in the body, including your metabolism, which is enhanced when you eat breakfast.
“Since you fast and don’t eat overnight while sleeping, foregoing breakfast adds to this fasting period and may disrupt blood sugar balance and insulin output.
“When people don’t eat breakfast, it triggers their bad eating habit throughout the day and they may tend to eat more food, which may result to quick fast food that has more fats.”
Also, a medical practitioner, Dr. Azeez Bada, who works at Ajayi Hospital, Lagos, said when people do not eat breakfast, they may be denied or deprived of adequate nutrition.

Bada said: “The breakfast skippers tend to be deficient in minerals such as calcium in addition to not getting enough fruits and vegetable that provides important nutrient.
“There is also a high level of resistance to insulin in individuals who consistently miss the morning meal.
“When you skip breakfast, your stomach sends signals to your brain that it is empty.
“And you will begin to experience hunger and your body may not have enough energy to perform its daily functions.
“Skipping breakfast may also trigger bad eating habits throughout the day, as cravings results to intake of quick fast foods.
“The body may start taking energy stored as glucose from your tissues, which can cause someone to feel tired.
“One of the reasons why those who eat breakfast are better able to maintain their weight is because they stave off hunger by eating a healthy breakfast.
“If you have skipped breakfast, you are more likely to reach for unhealthy snack options, such as convenience foods high in fat and sugar that can contribute to weight gain.”
Experts, however, advised that everyone should try as much as possible to eat breakfast to enhance their metabolism for the day.
