After a long and arduous season, Leo Messi missed an absolutely crucial penalty in the Copa America Centenario final shoot-out.
Argentina and Chile had played out a 0-0 opening 120 minutes – much like a year ago in the Copa America final.
To say Messi had the chance to steer history towards his own greatness would be an understatement.
3 finals. 3 losses.
It was the second penalty of the spot-kicks and came just after Chile’s Arturo Vidal had seen his penalty saved by Sergio Romero.
Whilst we would love to defend Messi, arguably the greatest player of all time, there is no denying what an important spot kick this was.
Score, and Argentina are ahead, with a real chance of finally winning their first major trophy since 1993 and breaking the hoodoo of the last two finals.
And, as can be seen on the videos below, it wasn’t a saved spot kick or a penalty that just missed, this was a Sergio Ramos-esque attempt from Leo Messi.
There will likely be Messi crying memes and replays of this spot kick for years to come.
Poor old Leo!
